I'm pinching myself to see if this is real. ESPN.com reports that the Mariners have signed Adrian Beltre to a 5-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $65 million. This just 24 hours after signing Richie Sexson to a 4-year deal. I never thought I'd say this, but great job, Bavasi.

But you're not done. the next thing to do may be the hardest, but get Andruw Jones from Atlanta. Find a way to make salaries balance out. Make what Billy Beane refers to as a "fucking-A trade." If it happens, the Mariners have the best Defense in baseball, and the pitching staff's ERA drops by half a run, minimum.

The defense will definitely be improved--no doubt about that. I don't know about Andruw Jones, though. He'd be the highest-paid guy on the team. Last year was his worst offensive season in years, and they say his defense isn't what it once was. Maybe if Atlanta is willing to pay a bunch of his salary.

I can't believe the M's got Beltre! What in the world?
andruw jones is already over the hill, despite his age. consistent decline over the last couple of years, and a longer defensive declinse. just coasting on his fat contract.
